World Champion

The crowd reached fever pitch. We were down to the final six competitors. Two each from New Mexico, USA and Ohio, USA plus one from Turkey and one from the UK. The World Gypsum Sledding Championships. In ideal weather conditions, the steepest slopes available held the promise of not only a new world champion but a new world record distance to boot.

So it was to prove as the long standing distance record was smashed on the very first run by Martin Robson from the UK. The Americans were beaten in their own backyard and a new world champion was crowned.

Picking up maximum style points Gönül Robson guaranteed Turkey a position on the winners rostrum….

With an honourable mention to a very sporting set of competitors who ensured an enjoyable competition for all.

Gypsum sledding is available at White Sands National Park, New Mexico on most days when missiles aren’t being tested nearby!
